THE LUNAR REPORT - "DOOK" April 5, 2010
So here’s a dilemma I have almost every year during the NCAA basketball playoffs. I am a fan of the University of North Carolina. I am sure that North Carolina State and Dook fans have the same dilemma at times. I am just as certain that if there were college football playoffs, Florida, Georgia, Florida State, Tennessee, Miami fans and others would be in the same boat.
For a North Carolina fan, the NCAA playoffs usually bring us enjoyment outside of the wins of our own team. Naturally, we are concerned about the other teams in our bracket. But there’s more to it than that. Now, granted, Carolina didn’t even make it to the “big dance” this year. That’s an anomaly. No big deal there. We’ll be back.
The thing is, whether or not Carolina is still in the hunt doesn’t always matter. As long as State or Dook are still playing, we always have a team to pull “against.” So, we spend a couple of hours watching one of the games with one of those teams, pulling as hard as we can against them. The dilemma is: What if Dook or State lose that game? We, Carolina fans, wouldn’t have that team to pull against in the next round.
So. Do we actually pull for them to lose? Or do we just hate their guts for a couple of hours, hoping all the time that they win, giving us another couple of hours in a few days to hate them again?
It freaks me out every year. That’s why I am glad we have finally come down to the final game. At last, I can pull against Dook and mean it. My Dook friends understand. They go through much the same as I - usually.
And, frankly, I don’t even know where Butler is located. They say they are from Indiana, but I have yet to see proof. Nevertheless. Go Butler! Beat Dook. For real this time.

I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures.
