THE LUNAR REPORT - "LIFE WITH JULIAN" April 19, 2010
I’m taking a break from the Lunar this week. It’s not that I need one. I love this. It’s just that there is something more important going on here.
Because of a really good friendship, I have had the pleasure to do some video work for The Autism Society of North Carolina. Those guys are pretty incredible. So are the folks they help. It has been rewarding.
Now. About my friend. From time to time, he has also been involved in the Autism Society video work. He is a very good journalist. An on-camera guy. Most notibly, a sportscaster. Though he does other things. I think the world of this man and his wife and family.
Usually, when I work with him, he is a happy-go-lucky, roll-with-the punches kind of man. He brings a smile to everyone’s face. He brings his own smile and style to work.
On those occassions when he has helped with the work of The Autism Society, his on-camera mood changes. It is sincere. It is every bit as honest as his roll-with-the-punches attitude. But it is different.
On those occassions, he looks at the camera or person interviewing him, and he describes, in great detail, his relationship with the topic. During all the years of shooting video or of being involved “behind the camera” in such things, I have teared up maybe three times. Two of those times happened to be when my friend, Dwayne Ballen, was being interviewed. Those were also the only two times I have seen that man with moist eyes.
Dwayne and his wife, Martina, have two sons. His oldest, Julian is 16. 12 years ago, Julian was diagnosed with Autism. Julian is such a great kid. So is the other, younger son, Jared. They cannot help it. They both have such wonderful and loving parents.
Dwayne and Julian now have a website. It is an on-going journal called, “Journey With Julian.” It will rip your heart out. But the tears you shed will be those of joy. Because Julian is a joy. To his parents, to his brother, to his school mates, to his friends. To the friends of his parents.
“Hello Mr. Moon” is how he always greets me as he extends his hand for a shake.
Take the time to read Dwayne’s journal. Even if it means taking a break from my Lunar nonsense. Read it. Subscribe to it. Share it when you can. This is really good stuff. And so important to so many.
