THE LUNAR REPORT - "HE NEVER SAYS, 'I LOVE YOU'" April 3, 2011
Confused. That’s what I was. It was bound to happen. It needed to happen. Sometimes I guess, only through confusion can clarity be achieved.
Last weekend, Matt and his bunch (that’s my son, Matt, his wife-to-be Sherri, her 8-year-old daughter Rachel, his three-year-old son Sy, their two-year-old son Seth and their 6-month-old dog Hooch) traveled to my place to spend a couple of days. Of course it was great to have them around. But, frankly, grand dads shouldn’t have to do what I had to do last Sunday. I have been there already. I have done such things and felt the pain way back when – when Matt and his young friends would be in my care. It was different back then.
Matt was easy to control when he was in my care. He was a good kid. He rarely made trouble or got out of hand. When he did, I would deliver a stern message, and he would correct his behavior right away. Usually. But he was an only child, so that made things different as well.
Matt has always been loyal. When he was young and when other kids would be around and get out of line, he would most always stick up for his old man. He would say things to his friends like, “Dad doesn’t want you to do that,” or “Dad doesn’t like it when you use words like that.” My job when there was more than one kid around was a piece of cake. Still, punishing children has always bothered me.
The thing is, I haven’t been around my grand children enough to build that loyalty. Well – not quite. And those young-ins are certainly not as close to their grand parents as they are their own parents. I understand that. What I didn’t understand until last Sunday was how they could all turn on me the way they did. This was something entirely new to me. And, yes, it confused me.
A jolly old easy-going grandpa should be able to give those guys anything they want – freedom, horseplay, screaming, hitting, throwing things, anything. My job is to entertain and enjoy. When things get out of hand, it is my job to simply tell them to go see their mom or dad. Problems solved.
Well last Sunday for a while, their parents left me in charge of the bunch. They went out alone for a couple of hours. “Oh, sure, I’ll be fine,” was what I told Matt after he asked if I would be okay with them for a while. I had taken care of the bunch before. There has never been a problem. I didn’t think last Sunday would be any different.
Well things got a bit out of hand. It was my fault really. They all thought I was playing. That’s because I was. For a while. The two-year-old was climbing on the soft end of a sofa arm, and I was pulling him off and onto the sofa. He laughed every time I did that. So he kept doing it. The others came over to join in the fun. The eight-year-old climbed on my lap, pinning me down and hampering my ability to save the two-year-old from possibly falling off the sofa. So, I had to take action. I transformed from the jolly old fun-loving gramps to the miserable old cranky man.
“Rachel. Get off me right now,” I said so I could deal with Seth.
“Seth! Stop it,” I scolded. He didn’t. He kept doing it and kept laughing. “Stop it! I mean it!” More laughter.
“Okay then, you’re just going to have to go to timeout,” I told him, and I took him into his room and placed him in his makeshift crib-type bed. “Now you stay there until you can listen to me,” is what I said to him. He didn’t understand a word I said, but I really didn’t have time to consider the mental capacity of a two-year-old when I said that. So, I scratched my head and left the room. The poor little guy started to cry and yell, “Mommy! Mommy!” Man. It killed me.
I walked into the living room where Rachel and Sy were just standing, looking at me, like two deer caught in a Waco floodlight. They had never seen me like that. I tried to ease their minds a bit by smiling and telling them that everything was okay. Still, those two angels were obviously worried about their brother in the other room. I knew this. I paroled Seth after just a couple of minutes. And just as I did every time I had to do the same thing to Seth’s dad years ago, this time, too, I told the little prisoner that I loved him, and I hugged and kissed him. Seth is tough. He dealt with it.
Problems over, right? Not quite. Shortly after that episode, they all turned on me again – at the same time. This time Sy showed his bravado as well. I would tell the little guy to sit, and he refused. Again and again Sy refused. And Seth was enjoying his newfound freedom and running amok. I immediately put Seth and Sy into bed and time out. I can reason with sweet Rachel. I asked for help. And she obliged me. She later helped control those guys, and she told me what her mom and Matt do in those situations. So she came through. She and I are pals. We always will be.
But none of those young-ins had ever seen me in that light. I will never forget the frightened looks on their faces that day - Seth’s crying and Sy’s fearful stares. And Rachel’s disappointment. I wasn’t angry with them. And when it was all over, they each got a hug and a cheek-kiss and an ”I love you,” just like Matt always got from me. But I had to do what I did. I had to get control.
Still. All that stuff bothered me. The rest of the day. We watched our favorite college basketball team lose that afternoon. That was painful as well. But during the entire game and even after, that stuff bothered me. I know that the things I did were the right things to do. Still – it was a first for me and my new young-ins.
A couple of hours after the game and after Matt and his bunch were all packed away and seat-belt-buckled into their vehicle, I did as I always do. I hugged and kissed the adults in the bunch, and told them both that I love them. I then went to each of the young bunch and did the same. This time, Sy, the three-year-old, happened to have been the last on my good-bye trip around the car. I hugged him, kissed him on the cheek, and said, “I love you.”
Usually when I do that, he smiles or squirms or laughs. That night he responded, “I love you.”
Matt closed Sy’s car door, looked at me and said, “Dad. He never says, ‘I love you.’”
But that night he said it. At a time when I really needed to hear it. There’s no confusion about that.
