Time sometimes plays some tricks on us. Minutes, days, and weeks did just that to my family and me recently. THE FUNERAL
Many of her troubles she brought on herself. You know. If she had only learned how to drive, or if she had spent less time ironing handkerchiefs, or if she had focused her emotional energy on positive things more than she did.
But her life was never easy whether she caused such troubles herself or not. Difficult became sort of normal for the woman. This was pretty much the case her entire life. So why should her last day here be any different? Well, it wasn’t.
My brother, sister, aunt and I did our best to make sure my mother would have a beautiful funeral last Saturday. Mama had one of the finest young Baptist ministers around. The funeral home director is an old friend of the family. He made sure Mama and her family received the best treatment. My sister-in-law bought for Mama a beautiful peach colored dress to wear. Family and friends all gathered in the church in downtown Burlington, North Carolina. It was the same church where Mama and Daddy were married. We visited, we laughed some, and we cried some. It was perfect. Finally things were going right for Mama.
The minister spoke for a while. We all sang Mama’s favorite hymns. A soloist did a wonderful job continuing the music. A cousin read scriptures. My son gave a powerful and tearful speech, honoring his grandmother and his Aunt Marilyn who cared for Matt’s Mother Moon these past years. Then the minister took over to present the eulogy. She smiled at my son and waited patiently for him to return to his seat. She smiled again, said about seven words, looked up toward the balcony of the church where a church volunteer was signaling something to her, and after regaining her composure as the fear in her eyes calmed just a bit, she calmly said, “Okay. We are under a tornado warning. I need to ask you all to go to the nearest Sanctuary exit and walk downstairs to the Fellowship Hall. Please move quickly”
I felt kind of badly about my behavior. I beat most of the women, children and elderly down those stairs and into the basement. But I was sitting on the front row when the evacuation began, so my exit was natural. Then I felt bad for poor Mama. The woman was deathly afraid of severe weather. When I was a child, Mama would gather us in the living room during strong lightening and thunder storms, unplug every appliance in the house, and make us sit quietly while she read Bible scriptures to us. And here, on her final day, she was left alone in a huge and empty sanctuary while lighting, thunder and tornados passed overhead. And – for the love of God, she was in a metal casket!
In the fellowship hall, the minister continued the service. Well, at least she tried to. Shortly after restarting the eulogy, a rather hard and steady stream of rain and flooded drain water began pouring through one of the doors of the hall. She stopped her words again, and asked some of the volunteers there to do something about that. They did. The rain and the water soon stopped. So did the wind and thunder and lightning. And we were all safe. Even Mama. But we never made it back upstairs, and the graveside gathering and prayers that had been planned never happened.
It was somewhat upsetting that Mama didn’t get quite the flawless send off we had all hoped for. But honestly? It was pure Mama. It was difficult. And just like all those other chaotic days and years in her life, she made it through this one as well. And just like all those other times, at the end of this day, too, she gave her children smiles to deliver us from tears.
Mama’s send off was memorable. She would have wanted nothing less.
