It wasn’t an “Ich bin ein Berliner,” “Tear down that wall,” or “I have a dream” speech, but for an idiot boy like me, that speech I made in a college public speaking class wasn’t bad.
It was a speech where I had to try and convince listeners of my point of view. I forget what they call that “type” of speech. But I remember the speech. Pretty much I do, anyway.
I argued about our days, our weeks, our years, and our lives. I made the point that after we enter the work force, our mornings are all about making it to the coffee break. After our break, our morning centers on the lunch-hour. After lunch each day, we focus on five-o’clock and clocking out.
Our weeks are occupied with thoughts of and longing for our two days off. And our years are just as focused on our annual two-week vacation.
And after so many days and weeks and years of this, the direction of our lives is clear. Retirement. And we spend, what? 30 years? 40 years? 50 or more years dealing with all this crap? Just longing for time off, lunches, vacations and retirement? And then what? We reach retirement age, and we are too damned old and tired to enjoy our free time. And the funny thing is, when we finally do reach retirement, we want to work and feel useful.
So my speech was all about changing things. In huge ways. Let us be retired when we are young and physically able to enjoy it. When we are old and tired and have nothing else to do, THEN we work. It seemed perfectly reasonable to me at the time. And it must have been a pretty good speech. When I finished, the instructor folded his papers, closed his briefcase, and as he was leaving the room said, “You sold me!”
Granted, that idea was a bit far fetched. But get this.
I have been a free-lance video writer/producer/director for years. Free-lance means that one either works for free or is free of work for rather long periods of time. That is, unless, one is also a top-notch sales guy. And honestly, I am timid and mostly too embarrassed to sell my services for such extraordinary amounts of money. I am a terrible sales person. So I have pretty much gone without work. For long periods of time. Until recently.
Now don’t get me wrong. The free-lance thing has been wonderful. Most days, the entire day is a coffee break or lunch or vacation or retirement. Especially if you can’t even sell helicopter detection devices to Bin Laden. But it’s also boring, and being broke much of the time is tiresome.
So – at age 57, I have kind of bagged the free-lance world. For the time being, anyway. And I am working two pretty full part-time jobs. I just want to work, and I want to make a steady income. The modesty of that income is only slightly disturbing. But the work is incredibly enjoyable. And it’s physically demanding. And my mornings are focused on breaks and lunch. My days are focused on 5-o’clock.
It was during my 15-minute morning break a few days ago that I realized something. As I was sitting in my car in the Lowe’s Home Improvement parking lot, smoking a cigarette and patting myself on the back for doing a pretty good job during my first two hours at work there that day, it all came back to me.
For the love of God, I am living that damned speech!
