Mama never asked too much of me. Well, she never asked me to do a great number of things. For the past twenty years or so, she really only asked me to do three things. But that was a lot. And it was all just too much for me to do. I understood the requests. I just couldn’t do them.
“Join a church.”
That was one thing she told me over and over again. And she almost always added, “I want you to be saved so that I can see you in heaven one day.”
I never could quite get the woman to understand that I am “right with God.” And that my church is my apartment, my workplace, the street, the freeway, the grocery store and every other place I meet fellow humans. And that I would surely see her in the after-life one day. I could go on and on about this, but I won’t. I will reserve this topic for dozens of Lunar Reports one day - maybe.
The point is, Mama died before I joined a church.
“Please stop smoking.”
This request is by far the most physically and emotionally demanding. And I get it. I just can’t do it. Not yet. But I do get it, and I want to, and I will.
But I didn’t do it before Mama died.
The third thing Mama asked of me over and over again was an easy thing for a man with no pet peeves to accomplish. But I have a pet peeve or two.
“Please place an American flag on your dad’s grave for Memorial Day,” she asked me every year since 1993.
“Mama. Daddy didn’t die in the war,” was my argument. But the woman never quite understood the meaning of Memorial Day. My dad was a veteran of World War Two, but when he died, he was a retired furniture store owner and salesman. Not a soldier. That didn’t matter to Mama. Every year, she asked me to do the same thing. And every year my stubborn peeve kept me from doing what she asked of me. And it was such a simple request.
I never placed a Memorial Day flag on the gravesite of the woman’s husband. And she died.
Late last week I made plans to meet one of Mama’s sisters, Aunt Barbara, for breakfast. We decided to meet on Memorial Day morning. Aunt Barbara asked me if I wanted to meet closer to where I live or near where she lives. Aunt Barbara lives near where both my parents are now, so I suggested her town. And I told her why. That woman understands things. She understood my reasoning. So we met in her town. She brought with her Mama’s older sister and the daughter of one of Mama’s younger sisters. We ate a good meal together, and we moved on.
After the meal, Aunt Barbara led us on a tour of sorts. First to her husband’s grave. Then to the gravesites of my cousin’s parents. And finally into the next town where both my parents are now buried. At each of the gravesites, we performed a special task. Just like my dad, none of my uncles died while serving their country. But Aunt Barbara placed an American flag at the foot of her dear husband’s grave. My cousin Tammy placed a flag at the foot of her dear dad’s grave. And when we arrived at the final earthly home of both my parents, I had two flags. Finally, I delivered the one Mama had for years asked me to deliver. I placed an American flag at my dad’s grave on Memorial Day. Finally.
But I also brought one for Mama. I looked at Mama’s fresh and grassless grave. And I said to myself, “That woman is as much of a ‘fallen hero’ as my dad and uncles.” So I placed the second flag at Mama’s feet. I owed her that.
I guess I have a ways to go before doing all Mama asked of me. But I hope she understands how much it meant to me to place a flag at her feet. I know her sister Barbara understands. So does her sister, Jerry. And her niece, Tammy.
