THE LUNAR REPORT - "LIFE ON THE EDGE" July 25, 2011
(THERE'S AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ON THIS WEEK'S BONUS BLOG, "LUNACY." BE SURE TO CHECK IT OUT.)
LIFE ON THE EDGE
Life on the edge isn’t easy. But I’m one of the lucky ones. The edge has been my neighborhood for a long time. I am used to it. I know how to navigate the dimly lit, narrow and cracking streets here.
Others aren’t so fortunate. Maybe they are new to this part of town. Maybe they hold on a bit too firmly to the notion we were mostly all raised with - to move off the edge and to just be normal. This Lunar is for my new neighbors.
Living here doesn’t mean one abandons the promise of normal. We really do strive for such. But until we can move where our parents wanted us to live, the normal line shifts just a bit. On the edge, normal is simply waking every morning. For me, about half the time, I awaken believing that good things will happen. On those days there is a certain order and surety of things and the day ahead. And usually when I believe that good things will happen, they do.
There are other days. About half again. On those days, believing in good things is more of a chore. Waking up from a deep sleep to change a morning of anxiety and doubt takes a bit of work. Thoughts go to the reality of no money or no work or impending foreclosures or troubled relationships or any and all of those things that cause the anxiety and doubt. After you have lived here for a while, you will learn to deal with all that, too.
But some of those hard days are more difficult than others to deal with. I had one of those days last week. The day started out as edge-normal. But there was little order, in my mind anyway, and I was sure of almost nothing. I was trying to work through it all. I did have some real work to do that morning. That was good. And I was expecting to have a paycheck from some part-time work in the mail. So, before driving off to work on a 100-plus degree day in a car with no air conditioning and a malfunctioning driver’s side window, I decided to check the mail. In this neighborhood one looks for anything to turn the day around. Sure enough, there was a check. For $29. There was also a final notice for automobile insurance. For $31.
Now one might think that checking the mail was the wrong thing for me to do. After all, I kind of lost two dollars just by opening my mail. But there was something else in that metal box. Something much more important to me that morning than money and insurance. It brought a smile to my face and an even greater smile to my heart. It was like a “travelers’ awards program” that gave me a free vacation day from life here on the edge. And I grabbed it. I kind of think I shared my vacation with all the neighbors here as well as others I met that day. They saw my smile. All day.
It was a simple post card from my cousin. Now it wasn’t all that simple. My cousin designs and prints her own cards with original art work and warm and timely sayings, poems, etc. But the act of sending it to me was simple and sweet and important. It brought order to my day. It brought certainty as well. It simply made life normal.
I can’t speak for my cousin. I don’t think she’s living on the edge, but I cannot say that sure. I do know this. She did something huge that day. I’ve found that doing huge things for folks who need huge things done also normalizes the doer’s life. She must feel extraordinarily normal.
For my neighbors here where I live - you can’t all see my smile. But you can read what brought one to my house and heart that morning. Here is what my cousin printed on her post card. It was adapted from the writings of Alice Hoffman:
For my friends living on the edge? Try doing for your neighbors what my cousin did for me. It will help you navigate the neighborhood. For a day or so anyway.

“That year the month of July was so beautiful people became lazy and stopped going to work. They sat out in their backyards, amazed by the heat and the blue sky; they wept at the sight of sunflowers and hollyhocks. It was a time when everyone felt lucky to be alive and paused to appreciate the sheen of the poplar trees at twilight or the call of the cricket, which lulled small children to sleep. People ate their suppers out on picnic tables, dreamily passing around cups of lemonade and fresh corn on the cob. They napped on front lawns, dizzy with sunlight and the sound of bees.”
For my friends living on the edge? Try doing for your neighbors what my cousin did for me. It will help you navigate the neighborhood. For a day or so anyway.

I know there’s a lot of Red Wing's talk over here lately, but it is well deserved. This is my fourth pair from the heritage line, and I cannot tell you how long I’ve had these on my wish list. The Red Wing Classic Round Toe isn’t just their 6 inch moc-toe cut down lower, it includes some additional welt construction and more moc-like stitching details. The rough-out leather in the “Maize Abilene” was exactly what I wanted for the ucoming Fall. These are the perfect shoe for being on your feet all day, with the ever-socomfortable Red Wing boots traction tred sole. Just a small note on sizing, I have always wore a 10.5 in Red Wings, and I could of went down to a 10 with these. It wasn’t a huge issue, but I did have to throw a Red Wing Oxford footwear insole into them for them to be fit perfect – take that with a grain of salt as everyone is different. A huge thank you to Jason over at The Tannery for helping me get my hands on these.

I was riding along a bike path in South-west Edmonton when I heard some pretty chirping Red Wings.Taking out my 300 mm and 500 mm lenses to see what I could see I dis-cov-ered the Red Wings Classic Work . The bright swatch of red definitely sets them apart from a crow or a raven, but it was their song that brought me in Red Wings Work Oxford Boots.
