THE LUNAR REPORT - "MIGHT BOX" August 15, 2011
These days, the longest line at any Food Lion in the country is the Lotto line. The second longest? The Coinstar machine. I, for one, keep all my coins in a plastic Food Lion bag by the front door of my apartment. I am ready to take action and feed the Coinstar at a moment’s notice.
The other day I watched on television the movie, “Showtime” with Eddie Murphy and Robert De Nero. It reminded me of something important from my past. The De Nero character was into making pottery. He made for the Eddie Murphy character a small, round and warped clay bowl. After Murphy unwrapped it, he asked, “So… what the hell is this?”
De Nero: “It’s… uh… well, you know. A coin dish. A place to put ya coins.”
My granddad had a coin dish. He kept it on the kitchen counter of his Burlington, North Carolina home, just beneath the cupboard where he used to keep a tall stack of Wrigley’s Doublemint for his 16 grandchildren. Unlike De Nero, Granddaddy didn’t make his coin dish, and it certainly wasn’t warped. It was a rectangular porcelain container. The container was maybe four inches long, three inches wide, and a couple of inches deep. That container held more coins than Fort Knox had gold. In my eyes it did, anyway.
That’s what Granddaddy called his “Might Box.” I just learned the other day why he called it that. Because there might be money there, and there might not. But you know what? That man was never a “might not” guy.
If my sister or I needed a quarter for a Creamsicle or Ice Cream Sandwich from Tucker Street Grocery, we went to the Might Box. If the paper boy came by when Granddaddy wasn’t home, we went to the Might Box. Or when we just needed a couple of pennies for our Weejuns, well you know. The Might Box.
And we really never even had to ask for the coins. My sister and I did. That was the way our mama raised us. But we really didn’t need to. You see, every time we took coins from that Might Box, more coins appeared. The level of metal in that box never changed. To this day, I believe I could have used those coins to make a down payment on a house, and the Might Box would still be full.
When the ex-wife and I started our small family, I tried a couple of times to create my own Might Box. Granddaddy’s Might Box was a good memory. I wanted my son and maybe later his children to hold the same warm memories that Granddaddy gave me. Well, it never happened. I don’t consider myself to be a “might not” guy either, but when it comes to loose change, I guess I am more of “Yeh, I‘ll spend it“ kind of guy. As hard as I tried not to, I kept robbing my own feeble “Spend It Box.”
But when it comes to doing the impossible, I often think of Granddaddy. No matter the odds against such things, I often say to myself in proper Burlington language, “Well, I might can do that.”
And when it comes to Creamsicles and Ice Cream Sandwiches for my grandchildren, well the Coinstar may have to go hungry. Nothing makes a “might guy” quite like his grandbabies.
