As divisive as the old woman could be sometimes, Mama kind of kept us all together all these years. She had her favorite family members, and she had ones she enjoyed complaining about. Complaining was one of the few joys in life she had. Don’t get me wrong. She loved us all. I just kind of think that sometimes she loved complaining more.
For years, Mama and Daddy’s children and grandchildren would gather together for Thanksgiving. Some of us traveled hundreds of miles to be there each year. But since 1992, the year the love of Mama’s life and the most complained about human being who ever lived - my dad - passed away, well, we kept coming home. I love my brother and sister and their life partners and their children and animals and my home town of Jacksonville, Florida. But year after year after Daddy died, my son and I traveled from North Carolina to Jacksonville for Thanksgiving for one reason - because Mama was there.
Mama’s not there anymore. She died last April. The day she was buried, there were terribly severe thunderstorms all around us. My best guess at the time was that she had rejoined my dad, and the complaining disturbed the heavens and the earthly atmosphere to degrees even my family had never witnessed. Well, maybe I guessed right, or maybe not. But I do recall that much of my mourning that day had to do with Jacksonville.
I had often wondered how it would be to go home again after Mama and Daddy left there. I wasn’t even sure I would go home again.
“Why would I?” I thought. “My siblings have their own lives. I have mine. But what now?”
Like those of all children, I suppose, our parents had major problems. And like all children, I suppose, we had to survive anyway. But Mama and Daddy did some good things, too. Creating a family is not that easy. Doing every little thing to keep that family together as it grows is even more difficult. Impossible even. But Joe and Marie did their best. And Joe and Marie were, seemingly, the only reasons we stayed together as a family.
Why did I go home for Thanksgiving this year? I did it to prove that Mama and Daddy’s best wasn’t futile. I went home. And I spent a couple of short and fast days with some of Marie's and Joe's best successes - their only daughter, a granddaughter and three of the most beautiful young great grandchildren you would ever want to know.
